Havana (Florida)

January /History on display in the windows of the antique shops/ A first date like an audition of what we touch: / gas station signs, Confederate dollars, a Spuds Mackenzie ashtray, / a shoulder bag screen-printed with Gaugin’s “Two Tahitian Women with Mango” / That’s what my fingers sing before the "ole-fashion" malt shop / that reminds me of K-Mart back home / Two ghosts in an economy of refuse / The price any town pays for not being on a river / The price the inhabitants pay: / to look at every object—blue or unbroken— / like there is a story hidden within.
